Perfectly Designed for Celestial Navigation
Last night, I visited a print shop to prepare something truly special for our sailing journey: the printing of our very own plotting sheet! Naturally, it features our logo. Together with the print shop team, we meticulously worked on every detail—from color choices and line thicknesses to the optimal positioning of each element. Every line, circle, and detail was carefully adjusted to ensure the plotting sheet is not only functional but also visually appealing.
A real highlight was selecting the perfect paper. We tested various types and weights, including a special synthetic paper that’s waterproof and tear-resistant—ideal for use on board, where moisture and harsh conditions are common. After several test prints, we found the perfect combination: vibrant colors, precise lines, and the ideal paper in both portrait and landscape formats on A3.
What is a Plotting Sheet?
For those who may not be familiar with celestial navigation: a plotting sheet is a specialized chart that helps navigators determine their position at sea. Using a sextant, you measure the altitude of a celestial body (like the sun or a star) above the horizon. This measurement, combined with the exact time, allows you to draw a so-called line of position on the plotting sheet.
The line of position represents all possible points where the observer could be to see the celestial body at the measured angle. By combining several such lines—from different celestial bodies—you get an intersection point that marks your exact position. Plotting sheets are an essential tool in traditional navigation, especially when electronic devices fail or are unavailable.
